What the ratings mean

Animedoll Field Guide editors compare documented product characteristics, not results of in-person testing. Ratings and shortlist language are editorial summaries of store listings, brand specification sheets, official product photographs and published buyer feedback. We do not physically inspect samples and cannot independently guarantee how a surface feels, how long a joint lasts or whether a specific shipment will match studio photography.

The scoring framework assigns published importance to criteria most relevant to adult anime-faced products. The exact model and material combination always matters more than a generic brand reputation. If source evidence is too thin for a meaningful comparison, we leave a score or factual field open and say so rather than inventing a precise ranking.

Editorial scoring weights

Weights are editorial choices fixed by animedoll.org, not independently validated measurements. Missing data lowers confidence and is not converted into fabricated numeric evidence.

OptionSpecificationWhat it means
Face sculpt and paint
  • Weight30%
  • Evidencehead identity, eye alignment, paint detail, neutral-angle photography
Anime styling is primarily expressed by the head; high-confidence attribution is essential.
Material and build
  • Weight20%
  • EvidenceTPE, silicone or hybrid specification, seams and finish
Claims of safety or durability require manufacturer or independent documentation.
Skeleton and posing
  • Weight15%
  • Evidencejoint specification, optional upgrades, support guidance
A photograph is not proof of a safe movement range.
Store and shipping
  • Weight20%
  • Evidenceauthorized channel, warehouse, total landed cost, returns
A strong face is not enough if fulfillment details are undisclosed.
Price and value
  • Weight15%
  • Evidencedated USD quote and confirmed included options
Lowest listing price is not necessarily the lowest completed cost.

How sources are checked

First, identify the brand and model on the manufacturer or retailer product page. Compare dimensions and material fields with other accessible specifications. For pricing, record the currency and month, then distinguish the base price from optional skeleton, insert, makeup and head charges. Store photos can show how a model is marketed but may include components not shipped by default.

Second, check the merchant’s published shipping and return rules. We look for stock origin, customs responsibility and the effect of customization on return eligibility. A store category page cannot guarantee current stock or exact dispatch time. Independent buyer forums may identify repeated concerns, but they are uncontrolled testimony and should not be presented as a failure rate or representative survey.

What evidence cannot establish

A manufacturer image does not prove softness, tensile strength, chemical composition or long-term comfort. A favorable written review does not establish that thousands of other deliveries were equivalent. A material name does not provide the concentration of additives or standardized lifespan. We use terms such as body-safe or medical-grade only when the particular seller or maker makes that claim, and we identify it as theirs.

Likewise, a legal statement from a merchant is not a substitute for a statute or customs authority. Import information is cross-checked against official agencies where possible, with a clear date. Proposed bills are not reported as operative offences until their status supports that conclusion.

Handling uncertainties and corrections

Each claim we check ends up confirmed, corrected or left open. Confirmed means the published source supports the specific statement in the context used. Corrected means an earlier figure or older page value conflicted with newer source evidence and was replaced. Open means no reliable source we could find supports the claim, so we do not present it as fact.

The price month matters. A reader viewing the guide later must know that an October 2026 quote can change. Corrections should identify the changed claim and the replacement source. An item may remain useful as a comparison even where its exact weight or price is not published, provided that limitation is explicit.

Editorial independence

Some redirects to stores may generate affiliate commissions. This financial mechanism does not purchase a position in the comparison or alter the published weights. We do not sell ranking positions. We also do not process the payment or select the store’s shipping method for the reader.

A responsible review therefore explains both the appeal and the downside of a configuration. The goal is to support an informed decision, not maximize clicks through a referral link. If there is insufficient evidence for a named model, a descriptive build type may be more honest than inventing a rank or star score.

Reading a score without losing the evidence

The published weights describe editorial priorities, not physical measurements of a finished unit. Face sculpt and paint receive the largest share because a distinctive anime head is central to the category. The material and frame categories ask whether the construction supports the intended ownership experience, while seller and shipping factors address the possibility that a correct model is difficult to purchase or service. Price and value compare what the buyer actually receives, not just the initial number on a promotional banner.

An overall score should not erase a serious unknown. For example, a highly detailed head can have an uncertain neck connection, and attractive pricing can coexist with a poorly described shipping route. We record the unresolved issue rather than silently assigning the favorable outcome. Ratings can be updated if a manufacturer revises an official spec sheet or the publicly available evidence improves. They are not a guarantee of condition, satisfaction, fit or long-term durability.

How to compare offers on the same basis

Begin with the maker's exact head identifier, adult body designation, exterior material and whether the price includes the head, wig, insert and other selected options. Then record total displayed price, origin warehouse, delivery charge and the seller's import-tax responsibility. A store listing that excludes a necessary component should not appear cheaper than a complete configuration without an explicit note.

For visual quality, compare the same lighting conditions where possible and distinguish studio photography from user-uploaded images. For physical handling, prioritize manufacturer-stated assembled and packed weights over estimates derived from height. For the seller category, confirm that a listed policy applies to made-to-order or customized goods as well as ready stock. When evidence differs among retailers, present the conflict rather than selecting the most convenient figure. This method aims for useful comparisons even when the market lacks independent uniform testing.

How we handle unknowns and changing information

A missing measurement should remain missing until a credible source supplies it. We do not derive body mass from an unrelated model, infer a five-year lifespan from a material label or describe an experimental feature as shipping hardware. Similarly, a promotional discount does not establish a stable typical price band. Dated pricing and the configuration included should appear together whenever feasible.

Published buyer discussions can indicate recurring complaints to investigate, but anonymous reviews do not prove a defect rate or quality-control standard. A few stories cannot establish prevalence. Legal and customs claims require more authoritative sources: government notices, legislation and relevant official guidance should outrank a seller's simplified import FAQ. If an official source is ambiguous, the editorial result should state the uncertainty and advise readers to obtain location-specific guidance rather than asserting an answer that the evidence cannot support.
